National CMSA Conference 2024: Advocacy Highlights from Providence, Rhode Island
I had the privilege of speaking on Lipedema advocacy at the National CMSA Conference 2024, where I shared my personal journey and aimed to illuminate the complexities of this often-misunderstood condition. Despite being recognized since 1940, Lipedema continues to evade timely diagnosis, significantly affecting the quality of life for many women.
Key Discussion Points:
Understanding Lipedema: We explored the disease's characteristics, prevalence, and genetic factors, raising awareness of its significant impact on women's health.
Standards of Care: I emphasized the importance of evidence-based practices, including conservative therapies and Lipedema Reduction Surgery.
Weight Bias in Healthcare: We addressed the detrimental effects of weight bias and its implications for women living with Lipedema.
Empowering Case Managers: The session highlighted the critical role case managers play in supporting patients through advocacy, education, and care coordination, helping them access essential resources and specialists.
Call to Action:
I concluded with a powerful reminder: "Lipedema does not need to remain a mystery. As healthcare professionals, we can be catalysts for change. Let’s raise awareness, encourage early intervention, and prioritize patient-centered care to transform the lives of women with Lipedema."
Together, we can make a difference!
